The Asteroids Galaxy Tour Live in New York

The following is a guest review from our boy Jeff of The Culture of Me.

It's always fascinated us here how artists, bands and fans outside of the US seem to take to the sounds from the twenty years from the day that rock 'n' roll as a genre happened. They simply "do" the music better than any of us, with more fervor than any of us and with the panache and vigor that seem to be all but gone from our minds here in the states. With the handful of people that make up Copenhagen, Denmark's The Asteroids Galaxy Tour, this all couldn't be more true. They've taken to the 60s soul, psychedelia and bubblegum like no band we've seen before--and remarkably, they've only been around for about a year.

And Sunday night, at their packed show at NYC's Le Poisson Rouge, throughout their 45-minute set of brassy, dancey and spunky tunes, they showed just how easy it is to win over hearts. With guitar, keyboard and bras-laden tracks like "The Sun Ain't Shining No More" and the iPod commercial used "Around The Bend", singer Mette Lindberg chose to let her voice do the, er, talking, flowing in and out of her range (massive for a woman so small of frame) and while the idiosyncrasies of her voice--which tends to squeak and bend somewhat randomly--may turn off some listeners, we didn't find it a trouble at all. What was most fun for us though, was that you couldn't have wiped the smile off of her or her bandmates' faces the whole time. Refreshingly simple, infectious and capital-F fun, we cannot tell you enough about putting this band on your watchlist. And seriously, prepare to have your summer taken over when the group's debut full length, Fruit, comes out May 19.

M83 - the importance of being honest

Hi, my name is Court, I'm new to Subdrive.

Many doubts came into my mind during the M83 show tonight at Bowery Ballroom. Am I ready to have my drunken/drugged up critiques considered by strangers? Is this really an electronic show? Do other people care that I can't spell for shit (let alone censor myself)? Am I even going to make it home?! Considering the inevitable, I went because (a.) I got in for free (b.) I really liked the last few (ok, few = 2) albums that I've taken my time with, and (c.) I'm finally committed to Subdrive after two years of promising to document my favorite shows and then ultimately forgetting about them.

The show began with a very light feel, almost reminiscent of seeing Sigur Ros where you're attentively waiting for the ascend to begin. The songs intensified as the show progressed and the crowed seemed neither restless nor bored. I, personally was more intregued by the calm, cool, and friendly nature of the crowd than repore of the band on stage. Anthony and his crew rocked out at times, yet there was an anxious energy that seemed to only be fulfilled by the climax of "Kim & Jessie" and then ultimately by the encore of "Colours"? (please correct me if I'm wrong....there were about 7 whiskeys on ice involved). All things stated, or mis-stated, there is no doubt that the new keyboardist chick fucking rocks!

If you were at the show, let us know in the comments!
