Mongolian Mixtape Marathon

Our friends from the UK-based blog Noise Porn are doing something amazing this summer. They're embarking on 10,000 mile drive from London to Mongolia, crossing Europe, central Asia and culminating with a dash across the Gobi Desert.

WOW.

If that's not crazy enough, they have over 800 hours of drive time to kill! As these guys are music nuts, they've started the Mongolian Mixtape Marathon to collect monetary donations alongside DJ mixes from around the world. Every donation received will go towards charity as well as repairs to the vehicle they're driving, which is also being donated.

So how do you come in? Hit up the website and make a donation of at least £1, then drop in all your info and submit your DJ mix. The guys receive this, put all the mixes together and listen to them all the way to Mongolia. Not only that, all the submitted mixes are going to be available to the world to download and stream via the Mixtape Marathon podcast.

We're really excited to be a part of this amazing project and have been working alongside our friends at Solution Nine for the past few months to design and develop the very technology behind the Mixtape Marathon project podcast and website. Our goal is to make this the largest and most successful mixtape project for charity ever.

It's really rare that an endeavor for charity like this is seen in our corner of the music world, so get your ass in gear and donate a mix!

Our good friends at the Famous Friends crew are throwing another fantastic party tonight in Brooklyn at Europa with none other than Australia's BAG RAIDERS, and this is their first US show ever! It's called the Turbo Love Tour, and the FF crew loved them so much they helped book the majority of the tour in the US.

The night is also rounded out by sets from Nightshifters runner, Jubilee, Kap10Kurt (DJ Set), and the Rude Crew DJing which probably includes that bear we see at parties around town.

This event is 18+ and its just $10! Doors open up at 10pm, see ya there!

TONIGHT: DISCOVERY w/ WORTHY, Derek Plaslaiko, Palms Out, Curb Crawlers, VDRK, and more!

The day has come everyone, the debut of the new party conceived by Famous Friends' fantastic and fun DJ, VDRK! DISCOVERY launches tonight at Greenpoint's club Studio B and promises to be a hell of a night. In contrast to Friday's hard electro show with MSTRKRFT, tonight's installment of DISCOVERY, titled Vol 1.: The Anabatic Records Party, is a focus on the more tech-house side of things.

Lots of folks have been talking up Worthy since WMC, so we're pretty excited to see what he has up his sleeves. He'll be joined by Derek Plaslaiko, a staple from the Detroit rave circuit, and a resident at Brooklyn's own Bunker and Wolf + Lamb parties.

The night will be rounded out by the talents of Joee Irwin from Palms Out Sounds and Brandon Sek of Curb Crawlers as well as the talented creator of the ceremony (CC?) VDRK and DISCOVERY resident John Top.

Oh and the cherries on top? There's a photobooth that will be taking Discovery branded digital photos right on site, PLUS there's 2-4-1 well drinks from open to midnight! PLUS if you show a car service/taxi receipt (must be date corresponding night) you'll get a complimentary well drink/beer. Now that's encourage to come from over the bridge!

Doors open 10pm. 19+ w/ID. $8 adv / $12 Door

See ya there!

Tonight: MSTRKRFT and The Bloody Beetroots @ Webster Hall

Oh man, this weekend is going to be rough (in an awesome way!). First off, we're sponsoring an amazing party at Studio B on Saturday called DISCOVERY with Dirtybird's WORTHY (who we heard is gonna kill it), the Bunker's own Derek Plaslaiko, and support from more very awesome folks. But of course, there are seperate posts, so more on that in a little bit!!

I'm telling you that TONIGHT at Webster Hall, if you like your electro hard, distorted, bleeped up, and from the label Dim Mak, get your absolute fix tonight with MSTRKRFT and The Bloody Beetroots. It's going to be a huge, huge show and with a price at only $15 (advance), it's pretty good.

Interestingly enough, the Beetroots just released their new single "WARP" on Dim Mak a week ago or so. It's one of the few tracks that I've read up on sites that has actually gotten backlash. Interestingly enough, you never read any negative writeups on tracks. The sites usually focus on just posting what they consider the best, filtering out what they don't like. But hey, they still posted it and gave it an editorial critique. Negative or not, I think it's a nice change instead of having singular praise and I hope that honest opinions continue to crop up on sites all over.

Then later tonight, check out Xavier de Rosnay of Justice fame DJing in the Webster Hall grand ballroom.

This Weekend: Famous Friends @ Webster Hall + Moby w/ AC Slater and Drop the Lime

It's FREEZING out here in Brooklyn but if you're interested in getting out and getting some liquor in you to warm you up and get hot and sweaty while dancing to some excellent music, I've got two parties I suggest you check out tonight!

First up is our good buds Famous Friends party at Webster Hall with The Glamour, Krames, VDRK, and Bradley D. They'll be rocking it out downstairs in WH's The Studio. Also, if you're a more mainstream dance fan you'll be able to catch Kaskade spinning in the main room upstairs.

After or before, head on over to Le Poisson Rouge to catch Moby, AC Slater, Drop the Lime, and JDH & Dave P rocking out at the Degenerates party.

Seriously, so much fantastic music tonight its really tough to choose from! But in the recession, prices make the call and both parties are perfectly priced at $8 if you RSVP (Famous Friends) and $10 pre-sale, $13 at door (Degenerates). So get your coats, dancing shoes, and rock out tonight! Stimulate that economy folks!

Events this Sunday

Yeah, I'm a genius for not posting events listings this week, but it's been a bit hectic. I just got back from a great loft party at Classon Ave and Myrtle where none other than Scottie B was DJing! Great time, unforunately I had found out about it this very evening otherwise it would have been great to let you all know about it. So with that in mind, I'm making a promise to make sure I report at least every Friday with better event listings.

And on that note, here's one for fun on a Sunday afternoon. The Silent Rave is back! We posted about this a few months ago and this one's going to be bigger and better by what the organizers say.

If you're not familiar with the Silent Rave, is organized by MindSpace, the same folks that do the huge Pillowfight, Light Saber battles, and bubble-battles in Union Square and in Canada.

So at 5:25pm be at Union Square with one of our SELEKTOR mixes or BEMF Live Sets and dance your booty off!

Fore more info check out the Facebook event page! Here are some basic info they have listed for the Silent Rave:

This set of instructions should comprise answers to most people's questions:

The basic premise is thousands of people turn up in a public place, plug in their own ipods, listen to their own music and dance and rave for hours!

The prospect of raving like you really don't care about what other people think, with thousands of fellow dancers, is a bloody brilliant one I think you'll agree!

The OFFICIAL start time to the event is 5:28pm! IGNORE WHAT THE FACEBOOK TIME SAYS (it doesn't let you put minutes like 28 in.) Please control your dancing urges until this exact time!

- NO THE MUSIC WILL NOT BE SYNCED FOR EVERYONE. The main point of Silent Raves is that people have freedom to listen to whatever they want, plus this way we get people from all backgrounds, and don't lose people who wouldn't like the music we'd play.

- HOWEVER, you are very welcome to coordinate something with your mates/make playlists/set up FM transmitters, but that'll all be via your own efforts. The official Silent Rave stance is people listen to anything they like.

- There will be a huge countdown started by your's truly, please no raving before this time! Then its time to go crazy.

- Please respect the other people dancing around you, and also the park! No-one wants a load of litter and bollocks to clean up afterwards, so just use common sense and don't be a muppet.

- Dress up in whatever you want to, your fellow ravers won't judge you!

- Show people they should be dancing in the streets, not in their rooms!

Silent Raves are supposed to be entirely non-destructive activities. As far as I know, no rave-related arrests were made back in April at the first, so let's keep it that way this time too!
I love this city more than any place I've ever lived, and I'd quite like to be able to come back in the future, so please be responsible ravers so I don't get sent to Guantanamo!

Events this week (Miami + NYC)

Ok, so yeah, I'm not at Winter Music Conference this year, but have fun if you're going. There are tons of parties that are going to kill, but Miami isn't the only place to be. If you're in New York this week, trust me, you won't be bored.

Tuesday night the 8-bit Atari punks Crystal Castles are performing at Studio B.

Famous Friends are throwing another great party called Fresh Arrest w/ AC Slater, VDRK, and Bradley D, Wednesday night at Happy Ending.

The guys from CUT NYC are throwing an awesome party of epic proportions on Thursday at Studio B celebrating the three-year anniversary (happy birthday to you, we're 3 too!) of the CUT parties. Institubes Paris Terror Club: Para One, Surkin, Bobmo; Trouble & Bass DJs are all going to be destroying Studio B. We'll be there covering the party, so come out, say happy birthday to Shark and the Capt and while you're at it, say hello to us!

Simian Mobile Disco will be rocking out as well at the One Step Beyond party at the American Museum of Natural History. Seriously, seeing them playing live in the space section is pretty awesome. Their setup already looks like it came from deep space. The show is apparently sold out but you can try your hand at winning some tickets here while listening to the entire "Attack Decay Sustain Release" album too!

Now for Miami, I can't even list the amount of events this year. I'll just point you to The List which basically has the entire lowdown for everything WMC in Miami. I'll post some shows later today that you shouldn't miss.

Get Lawless with Sta and Cousin Cole

Sorry everybody on the lack of updates, I was out of the country on holiday, but lots of stuff and news to announce and post!

So first thing's first, our next LAWLESS party is on February 15th, 2008 at Hope Lounge here in Brooklyn, NY. Headlining our latest soirée are none other than Subdrive favorites Sta and Brooklyn's own Cousin Cole!

We featured Sta back in November and since then he's completed his "In Living Colour" EP, which will be out tomorrow, January 28th, on Marine Parade. The EP rocks the original "In Living Colour" track, plus a new track called "Sex", and a DIM remix of ILC. Trust me, pick it up, it's awesome. The tracks are going to destroy dance floors for some time. Coming all the way from Toronto, this is going to be his Brooklyn-debut so come support the man, pick up "In Living Colour", and dance! Download and listen to his awesome In Living Colour promo mix he sent us while you get psyched for the party!

Cousin Cole will be rocking the decks hard as well. The man has got his "Tambourine Dream" Ep out. He sent us some shots of the picture disc and it looks fantastic. You can pick up the 12" on his myspace! He also sent us his great remix of "Let Me Clear My Throat" and I was unable to post it up due to my trip, here it is!

The party is 21+ and is FREE w/ rsvp. Thanks to Hepcat Music who were awesome enough to sponsor the event, so make sure you come early and stay late!!

Halloween + Cousin Cole

I went down home to DC this past weekend and being the jackass I am, I completely didn't realize that lots of the Halloween parties would be this weekend. Luckily there are several awesome parties on Halloween here in the city. So get your costumes and get ready to dance!

Brooklyn's own Cousin Cole will be dropping some hot tunes at "Unhappy Ending" at Happy Ending. Check out his rework he sent us of the Flufftronix remix of the Misfits "Halloween". He'll be throwing down alongside djs Dayta (Texas), Skeet Skeet (LA), Mr. Andersonic, and Rezound. Oh and there's also open bar from 11-12. Doors open 10pm

Then there's the DFA and their ghostly little party with djs and acts from all over. They got Matthew Dear’s Big Hands, The Juan Maclean, Morgan Geist, T&T, Derek Plaslaiko doing the deed at Studio B.

If you're in Chicago, you'd be crazy not to go check out Flosstradamus at Witches Ain't Shit! 2 with Amanda Blank (of Spank Rock), Sweetheart, and video by Thunderheist.

Fuerzabruta in NYC!

Photo by Joe Fornabaio for The New York Times

This isn't really an electronic music event, nor is it about a dj. This is more about a phenomenal theatrical event that's finally here in New York. If you're familiar with De La Guarda, the awe-inspiring, in your face, acrobatic show; you're going to love this! From the same people comes Fuerzabruta, which translated from spanish means Brute Force. Completely different than De La Guarda, the show is more ambitious and epic than the last. I had the chance to catch the production when it debuted about two years ago in its native Argentina and I was floored with what I saw. As in De La Guarda, the audience is an important part of the show and is encouraged to participate throughout the production.

You can catch the preview performances now through October 23rd at the Daryl Roth Theater at 151 East 15th Street here in New York City. Regular performances begin October 25th and run through February 17th, 2008.

Tickets are now available online through Telecharge.

I LOVE TECHNO, COLORS, AND AWESOME LINEUPS

On first glance of this website you'd think that they were doing a rave-revival massive , complete with the color-coded rooms and chill out DJs. But I HEART TECHNO, I LOVE TECHNO looks pretty awesome this year with a really wide assortment of talent. The who's who of the scene and blogosphere are present and most of them performing live no less! Justice, Simian Mobile Disco, Digitalism, Klaxons, etc. The list goes on with Erol Alkan, Stephan Bodzin, MSTRKRFT, and more.

The organizers have done a great job of branding the festival and its website. The logo is great and one of the cooler features of the website is that they let you create these "custom lineups" so that you and your buddies can organize yourselves. It's pretty brilliant, especially using the color-coded rooms concept.

All in all the festival has a phenomenal lineup and should be something to check out if your in Belgium in November!

CMJ approaches, here's what to see!

I've got a firm belief that whenever these music marathons or industry showcases you should go to as many shows as you possibly can because lots of bands that normally don't come to perform show up in droves. Because there are a gazillion bands performing at the CMJ marathon, I'm highlighting the parties/shows that I think should not be missed. Each title is a link to the ticket/RSVP page, and has the pricing in bold. This little list will be updated up through CMJ.

10/17

Fool's Gold Tour w/ Kid Sister, DJ Mehdi, A-Trak, Kavinsky - 10:30pm @ Hiro Ballroom - $12

You've probably heard of Kid Sister from the Kanye "Can't Tell Me Nothing" mixtape. She's rocking out the show with Mehdi and Kavinsky who are both excellent Djs from the now world-famous Ed Banger crew. Oh yeah...and don't forget DMC champion A-trak who just happens to also be Kanye's DJ.

10/18

Simian Mobile Disco LIVE - Music Hall of Williamsburg - $18

Attack Decay Sustain Release dropped recently and the SMD guys are pushing it hard with several DJ sets and live shows.

AM Only CMJ Showcase - 8pm @ Hiro Ballroom - Free w/ RSVP

Former regular on Subdrive, Lazaro Casanova, Freeform Five, LA Riots, and the AM Only crew rock the "Kill Bill Crazy-88 battle scene" style venue.

HEIST! Scion Showcase Party w/ Le Castlevania, Franki Chan, Toxic Avenger, and more - Rebel NYC - Free w/ RSVP, $5 without

New Young Pony Club, Muscles, Simian Mobile Disco (DJ set) - Studio B

10/19

MSTRKRFT, Z-Trip, Lazaro Casanova - Studio B

It's cool to see it mixed up with Z-Trip who's sets get people going nuts. I saw him spin on the Scratch tour back in 2003 where he retired his 45" records-only set here in NYC. Don't miss this! MSTRKRFT of course are the big boys of the scene right now so if you haven't seen them play out, here's your chance.

10/20

Matt and Kim w/ Flosstradamus - Music Hall of Williamsburg - $5

Best friends Matt and Kim and Flosstradamus are gonna throw down an awesome show on the 20th. If Justice isn't your thing you should definitely go see these guys. Matt and Kim are probably the happiest sounding kids you'll ever hear and Flosstradamus throws down amazing sets mixing with 3 tables no less! Don't Miss This!

JUSTICE, Midnight Juggernauts - Terminal 5 - SOLD OUT for Oct 20th

The talk of 2006 + 2007, with that infectious little diddy D.A.N.C.E. in everyone's head they have THREE dates at CMJ! The 20th is the first date and sold out, but you might get lucky and get a ticket from a friend.

Mas & DIW Unoffical CMJ Party
- 9pm @ Glasslands Gallery - $10 (21+)

DJ sets from Vito, Druzzi, & Mattie (The Rapture, Throne Of Blood), James F!@#$%^ Friedman (Throne Of Blood), Holy Ghost (DFA), and live performances from Yeasayer (We Are Free), and MGMT. Plus a special DJ set from Justin Broadrick of Jesu/Godflesh/Napalm Death fame.

Flosstradamus @ Let's Go presented by Palm recap

Palm happened to launch their new $99 (say what?) smartphone yesterday, the Centro, and had a launch party at Stereo featuring the likes of Flosstradamus, XXXChange of Spank Rock, and a special appearance by non-other than Switch! Pictures after the jump!

Flossy-D dropped an amazing set like always and Switch was rocking the crowd to his signature style. Best of all the party was completely free and had snacks (grilled cheese!) and a 3-hour open bar of anything you like.

Yeah I'll make sure to post this one BEFORE it passes next time ;).

More photos as soon as I can scan them (got shots from our Cheki cam!)!

Justice, Chemical Brothers, Ladytron LIVE in NYC

This is for all the New Yorkers! A slew of excellent electronic shows are coming into town in the next few months. Justice are playing their first headlining CMJ show on October 20th at the brand new Terminal 5, one of the Bowery Presents new venues.

The Chemical Brothers are also embarking on their first US tour in God knows how long alongside Ladytron at McCarren Pool on September 22nd.

Justice last played here a few months ago with the Ed Banger crew and absolutely killed it at Hiro Ballroom, as well as the Chemical Brothers at Ultra NY two years ago!

Don't sleep on these shows as they will definitely sell out!

Get your tickets for Justice and Chemical Brothers before they sell out!
