Mongolian Mixtape Marathon

Our friends from the UK-based blog Noise Porn are doing something amazing this summer. They're embarking on 10,000 mile drive from London to Mongolia, crossing Europe, central Asia and culminating with a dash across the Gobi Desert.

WOW.

If that's not crazy enough, they have over 800 hours of drive time to kill! As these guys are music nuts, they've started the Mongolian Mixtape Marathon to collect monetary donations alongside DJ mixes from around the world. Every donation received will go towards charity as well as repairs to the vehicle they're driving, which is also being donated.

So how do you come in? Hit up the website and make a donation of at least £1, then drop in all your info and submit your DJ mix. The guys receive this, put all the mixes together and listen to them all the way to Mongolia. Not only that, all the submitted mixes are going to be available to the world to download and stream via the Mixtape Marathon podcast.

We're really excited to be a part of this amazing project and have been working alongside our friends at Solution Nine for the past few months to design and develop the very technology behind the Mixtape Marathon project podcast and website. Our goal is to make this the largest and most successful mixtape project for charity ever.

It's really rare that an endeavor for charity like this is seen in our corner of the music world, so get your ass in gear and donate a mix!

SELEKTOR: Chrome Kids - Hulk Hop vs Crunk Rock

Since we launched our 2009 Survey, I've seen lots of requests for more SELEKTOR mixes and DJ mixes in general. Well folks, you've been heard and we're going to be doing our best to post many, many more mixes this year.

So starting that all off tonight is this fantastic mix I got in the mail from the Chrome Kids, a blog and DJ crew from the UK showcasing some of the best in dubstep, grime, bassline, and as they call it "the digitally mutated bastard offspring of hip-hop". The mix, titled "Hulk Hop vs Crunk Rock", is a best of compilation of the aforementioned, but the guys explain the mix best:

It’s with great pleasure that we unleash our brand new Mixtape on your earlobes. Hulk Hop Vs Crunk Rock is stacked full of the meatiest Dubstep, Grime and the kind of bass heavy digital Hip-hop which has a dozen or so tenuous genre titles such as Lazer Bass, Robo Booty, Turbo Crunk and Glitch hop. Anyone familiar with our Chrome Kids Music blog will know the deal.

As commentators on the scene, the lack of definitive titles for anything can be frustrating at times but as artists we love it. Robo Crunk and Hulk Hop are not meant to be our claim on the sound’s monikers, simply a few more fun names for the mix. The music itself evolves with such a rapid fluidity it almost seems a shame to try and lock it down with titles, plus all music Subcultures are taking their dying breaths, so who really wants to create another one?

Still, for us this music speaks with the most relevance for the times we’re living in now. Our background, although most prolific in Hip-hop takes in a youth of Dancehalls, Raves and Jungle nights, and between us we’ve deejayed at Reggae nights, Rock nights, Punk nights, Drum & Bass nights, Bhangra nights and Free Parties. For us being Chrome Kids is the natural development from all of these, and Hulk Hop Vs Crunk Rock is our soundtrack for the moment.

So throw on this mix and pump up the bass to 11, the Chrome Kids are taking over tonight.

SELEKTOR: Streetlab - EXCLUSIVE EP Promo Mix

Day after Halloween treat for you all! I first came across Streetlab earlier this year on the pages of Going.com. But before then, they had a remix played on the BBC's Radio 1, the guys have released their first track on RCRD LBL/Downtown for free download and are playing a bevy of live shows in NYC and hopefully soon abroad.

Streetlab might bring to mind old-school bigbeat acts like the Chemical Bros and Crystal Method, but their sound is all their own with a harder and four-four rock rhythm which is straight up for dancing. You can hear it in the stuff they produce as well as in their choice and style of remixes. It comes as no surprise that their SELEKTOR mix is tinged with their own recuts of some pretty big rock tracks as well as original tracks from their new EP.

So now that you know who they are, or at least a little bit more about them, I'm psyched to share their SELEKTOR mix, made exclusively for Subdrive, to help promote their new EP out now at all digital shops and on a cool limited-edition USB-wristband format.

Treasure Fingers - Live at the 2008 Brookyln Electronic Music Festival

We've come to the last set in our BEMF Live series; I know you've all been waiting for this one. It's a pretty big thing when you can cross over from a genre to another, but it's a whole other thing to be successful in both and have consistent gigs. AJ, aka , Treasure Fingers, aka one part of the internationally-known American drum 'n bass group Evol Intent, has done just that.

With Cross the Dancefloor, Treasure Fingers has affirmed his place among the top of the crop of new up and coming producers in the genre. Including being on A-Trak + Nick Catchdub's Fools Gold, he's got a pretty good startup in the electro scene.

Mix years and years of producing and DJing as a part of Evol Intent and you've got a bonafide superstar in the making. This final live BEMF set is a testament to that as you can hear him tear through massive bangers and just make the crowd go insane. Catch him on tour worldwide now and definitely pick up his new Cross the Dancefloor EP out now worldwide on iTunes or Amazon.

Flosstradamus on Mad Decent Dancemania podcast

photo: Huy Doan

I was talking to Curt of Flosstradamus a few months ago when they were last in town about what they were working on. Talk of the album came up including touring, but one thing they said though was that they wanted to start working on a podcast and get out more mixes. Well, today they've released their debut on the Mad Decent Dancemania podcast!

It's a great mixup of early Chicago house tracks and ghetto-tech that'll get your booty shakin'. Check out on the site or subscribe to the podcast and you'll get updates regularly, just like on Subdrive!

Blurb from the post:
Curt from Flosstradamus here. Just giving you the low down on this podcast. The boy Diplo asked us to do a Dancemania pod cast. If you don’t know about it Dancemania is a label out of Chicago that started in the mid 80’s with some pretty known anthems and artists. It wasn’t till the early 90’s when the more known names such as: DJ Funk, Paul Johnson, Dj Deeon, etc. were putting out heaters on DM, with ghetto and disco sounds. Within a few years the label put out more songs than you could download in one day off of hype machine. By 2001 they put out the DM 300 12″!! Over 300 songs on a single independent label out of Chicago! Pretty cool if ya ask me?

Download the mix here or subscribe through iTunes.

So with that in mind, enjoy this banging set of wobbly-bass "cosmic" electro with some hip-hop thrown in for good measure.

Don't forget to stop by myspace and drop Morsy, Kestar, and Crooked Disco some love!

He's currently Djing on the Warped Tour this summer and is popping up everywhere including your home town.
